Andros Island

The Green Heart of the Cyclades

Andros is the northern gateway to the Cyclades, just two hours by ferry from Athens yet a world apart. Stretching 40 km long and 17 km wide, the island blends dramatic mountains with fertile valleys, cascading rivers and 176 km of indented coastline dotted with sandy coves and rocky promontories. No wonder poet Andreas Embirikos crowned it “the queen of the Aegean.”

Unlike the sun-bleached stereotypes of the Cyclades, Andros overflows with water. Springs such as famous Sariza in Apikia bubble up ice-cold drinking water, while rivers like Achlas carve deep ravines that burst with greenery. Hikers move from arid ridges to plane-tree forests perfumed by thyme and citrus in minutes, a living “miniature Greece” of contrasting landscapes.

Coastlines Made for Every Traveller

On the west coast, generous golden arcs like Batsi, Chrysi Ammos and the nearby coves of Agios Petros roll out soft sand and shallow turquoise water that families adore. Sun loungers, sailing schools and friendly cafés mean you can move effortlessly from paddle-boarding lessons to sunset cocktails without ever leaving the shore. Cross to the untamed east and the mood flips: river-fed Achla, cliff-wrapped Vlychada and the hidden pebble bays that pepper the cape invite swimmers, snorkellers and drone photographers seeking raw Aegean beauty and near-total silence.

Throughout July and August the reliable meltemi breeze funnels between Gavrio and Kypri, cooling high-summer afternoons and rewarding windsurfers, kitesurfers and skippers with steady, exhilarating runs that still feel like a well-kept Andros secret.

Four Villages, Four Personalities

Chora – The elegant capital balances neoclassical mansions and Venetian ruins on a narrow peninsula flanked by the beaches of Neiborio and Paraporti. The photogenic Tourlitis Lighthouse and the Square of the Unseen Sailor headline sunset strolls.

Gavrio – As the main port, Gavrio welcomes visitors with tavernas, cafés and easy access north to Vitali and Zorgos beaches. It is the practical heart of island logistics yet still feels unmistakably Cycladic.

Batsi – Once a humble fishing cove, Batsi is now the island’s nightlife hub. Its horseshoe bay is fully organised, perfect for families by day and cocktail bars by night.

Korthi (Ormos Korthiou) – Framed by the castles of Faneromeni and lush farming terraces, laid-back Korthi is the place to sample “Little England” film locations and dive into the legendary Grias to Pidima beach.
