The Green Heart of the Cyclades
Andros is the northern gateway to the Cyclades, just two hours by ferry from Athens yet a world apart. Stretching 40 km long and 17 km wide, the island blends dramatic mountains with fertile valleys, cascading rivers and 176 km of indented coastline dotted with sandy coves and rocky promontories. No wonder poet Andreas Embirikos crowned it “the queen of the Aegean.”
Unlike the sun-bleached stereotypes of the Cyclades, Andros overflows with water. Springs such as famous Sariza in Apikia bubble up ice-cold drinking water, while rivers like Achlas carve deep ravines that burst with greenery. Hikers move from arid ridges to plane-tree forests perfumed by thyme and citrus in minutes, a living “miniature Greece” of contrasting landscapes.
